Mary, Our Mother

On the feast of the apparitions of Lourdes, the place chosen by Mary to demonstrate her maternal solicitude for the sick, the liturgy appropriately reaffirms the Magnificat…This is not the hymn of those upon whom fortune smiles, who always have 'the wind in their sails'; rather, it is the thanksgiving of those who have experienced the dramas of life, but who trust in the redeeming action of God.

Mary's message is a message of hope for all men and women of our day, whatever their country of origin. I like to invoke Mary as the star of hope. On the paths of our lives, so often shrouded in darkness, she is a beacon of hope who enlightens us and gives direction to our journey.

I like to invoke Mary as the 'star of hope' ... who enlightens us and gives direction to our journey. Through her 'yes', through the generous gift of herself, she has opened up to God the gates of our world and our history. And she invites us to live ... in invincible hope, refusing to believe those who claim that we are trapped in the fatal power of destiny.

Mary stands before us as a sign of comfort, encouragement and hope. She turns to us saying: ‘Have the courage to dare with God…Commit yourselves to God, then you will see that it is precisely in doing so that our life will become broad and light, not boring but full of surprises, for God’s infinite goodness is never depleted.’

The demanding but consoling message the Virgin left us at Fatima is full of hope. It is a message that focuses on prayer, penance and conversion; a message projected beyond the threats, dangers and horrors of history, inviting humankind to have faith in the action of God, to cultivate great hope, and to experience the grace of the Lord in order to love Him, the source of love and peace.

Mary is the Mother of the Saviour…She is also our mother because, in her unique maternal relationship with the Son, she shared His mission, for us and for the salvation of all mankind.

It is because she is Mother of the Church that the Virgin is also the Mother of each one of us, members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Christians have always sought the smile of Our Lady…. This smile of Mary is for all, but it is directed quite particularly to those who suffer, so that they can find comfort and solace therein. To seek Mary’s smile is not an act of devotional or outmoded sentimentality, but rather the proper expression of the living and profoundly human relationship that binds us to her as our Mother.
