The Church

For the Church, charity is not a kind of welfare activity which could equally well be left to others, but is part of her nature, and indispensable expression of her very being.

The Church

The Church was catholic from the very outset, that her universality is not the result of the successive inclusion of various communities. Indeed, from the first moment the Holy Spirit created her as the Church of all peoples; she embraces the whole world, surmounts all distinctions of race, class and nation; tears down all barriers and brings people together in the profession of the triune God. Since the beginning the Church has been one, catholic and apostolic: this is her true nature and must be recognized as such. She is not holy because of her members’ ability but because God himself, with his Spirit, never ceases to create her, purify her and sanctify her.

The Church

Just as in their love man and woman become "one flesh", so Christ and humanity gathered in the Church become through Christ's love "one spirit" (cf. I Cor 6: 17; Eph 5: 29ff.). Paul calls Christ the new, the last Adam: definitive man. And he calls him "a life-giving spirit" (I Cor 15: 45). With him, we become one; with him, the Church becomes a life-giving spirit. The holy City, where there is no longer a temple because it is inhabited by God, is the image of this community that is formed from Christ.

The Church

This month can thus be an opportunity to return to the faith of the primitive Church and, in union with Mary, to understand that our mission also today is to proclaim and witness with courage and joy to the Crucified and Risen Christ, the hope of humanity.

The mystery of the Church...is called to make Christ's light shine in the world, reflecting it in herself as the moon reflects the light of the sun.

The Church

The Church - and in her - Christ, still suffers today. In her, Christ is again and again taunted and slapped; again and again, an effort is made to reject him from the world. Again and again, the little bark of the Church is ripped apart by the winds of ideologies, whose waters seep into her and seem to condemn her to sink. Yet precisely in the suffering Church, Christ is victorious.

The Church

The Church is alive with the love enkindled with the spirit of Christ. This love does not simply offer people material help, but refreshment and care for their souls, something which often is even more necessary than material support.
